RAISING THE LITTLE BARR'S

Food & Drink!

Charlene2 Comments
{I titled this Food & Drink....think I've been watching a little too much Wheel of Fortune lately!? Probably...}

Finger prick, meter strip, wait a sec...and BAM, I thought I was doomed to having to prick my finger 4x a day and continue eating the strict, yet healthy diet of gestational diabetes. Based on my fasting numbers, the phlebotomist thought I was doomed as well. So there wasn't much hope! That is, until I received a call the very next morning. Quick turn around phone calls like that usually signal bad news, right? Isn't is usually no news is good news in the medical world? Who knows...but that call was good news! I passed the 3 hour with my numbers in completely normal range. Yesssss!

So I celebrated with a giant chocolate cake topped with extra sprinkles and whipped cream. No, I'm kidding, I totally did not ;) {Not saying I wouldn't have loved to} But I'm still going to try and eat better for myself!

I hit the 29 week mark yesterday, so a chalkboard update post is coming soon. Don't fret ;)

In the mean time, just wanted to share a few randoms with ya!

1. A recipe I tried out
2. My drink of choice, especially good during pregnancy
3. An amazingly delicious-looking recipe
4. A peek at our baby girl's face

I was making shredded chicken pitas for dinner and wanted to attempt homemade tzatziki sauce. It was yummy..and pretty healthy..you should try :)

homemade pita chips and tzatziki sauce recipe

homemade pita chips and tzatziki sauce recipe

Tzatziki Sauce Recipe:
  • about 8 ounces plain greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber - peeled, seeded, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • lemon juice
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried oregano (or dill)
  • 1 1/2 cloves garlic, peeled

Combine cucumber, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, oregano (or dill) and garlic in a food processor or blender until smooth. In a seperate dish, slowly fold cucumber mixture into yogurt. Add seasonings as necessary and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Pita Chips Recipe:

  • whole wheat pita pockets
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • dried basil
  • whatever other seasoning you want :)

Cut pita pockets using a pizza cutter into small triangles. Combine all ingredients in small cup and brush onto pitas. Bake at 400 for about 5 mins or until desired crispiness.

Enjoy!

Onto my drink of choice! If you're in the fam..you already know this.

La Croix, baby!

On one of the pregnancy sites, many girls were asking opinions on what to drink aside from water (since doctors try to steer you away from caffeine/soda/juices loaded with sugar). Luckily, I've been a La Croix lover well before I was pregnant and it's been wonderful!

Zero everything. No sugar, calories, sodium, artificial sweeteners, etc. Zilch, zero, nada!

la croix, safe drink during pregnancy

{How our fridge looks when they are on sale}

I'll be honest and say that a lot of people who try it, don't like it very much. But I think they are just trying to compare it to some delicious caffeine/sugar filled Cherry Coke or something ;) It sure ain't no Cherry Coke, but it beats water when you're just not in the mood, that's for sure!

That delicious recipe I spoke of before? Check it out!

peanut butter pudding cookies

Oh yes, you read that right. Peanut butter PUDDING cookies! Click for the recipe.

I WILL be making these this fall, you can count on that ;)

And I'll leave you with a sneak peak of Baby B's face. I love being able to see her during an ultrasound!

Helllo Third Trimester!
{on the home stretch now}

Baby kicks have been making me smile lately. Baby kicks, combined with thoughts of our little girl's arrival drawing closer and closer, have kept us content and thankful to be in this moment we are now. A hectic week following my doctor's appointment last Tuesday has left me enjoying the little moments spent on the couch at night with my husband, pup, baby kicks, and a new yummy scented candle. Oh yeah, and new fabric softener on my soft knit blanket that releases a soothing scent with every move has made me one happy girl. It's the little things {obviously!}. For me, the path to happiness is contentment!

I knew that last week's doctor's appointment would leave me feeling overwhelmed, so the anticipation left me okay with it all as I had fully prepared myself. Tons of questions and catching up due to moving and meeting with a new OB at the start of the 3rd trimester, switched my medication, a possible infection (which results later showed all was normal..phew!), scheduling of an ultrasound (for this coming Thursday) to get more measurements and cardiac activity since my records aren't complete, and an order for my 1 hour glucose test. The latter did not go so well.

For those who aren't familiar with the test, it checks for gestational diabetes, which happens when the pregnancy hormones block insulin from doing its job. Had to fast for 12 hours, go to the lab, drink an insanely sugary/syrupy drink, followed by a blood draw. Results came back: elevated glucose level and low iron. Rx for the iron, and sent for a follow-up 3 hour glucose tolerance test which I completed today -- fasting for 15 hours total -- finger prick, blood draw, sugary drink with double the dose of last test, blood draw after 1 hour, blood draw after 2 hours, and blood draw after 3 hours. Now that was fun! {NOT} Hoping for good results, but we shall see. Wish me luck, people!

On a different note, we ordered lots of new stuff this weekend :) Including baby girl's crib! We also ordered a new dining table, chairs, and a few other (smaller) items. Lucky for us, we are hoarders of gift cards. We usually save all the gift cards we get from Christmas, Birthdays, etc. until we come up with something really great {in our minds! haha} to purchase. So, gift cards were used in abundance this past weekend. We have not depleted those resources quite yet, though, as we still have money for Trader Joe's and Hobby Lobby {woohoo!} The Hobby Lobby will probably be used tomorrow, though! :)

Onto the chalkboard update! ---->

28 Weeks
28 weeks pregnant chalkboard update; little baby garvin chalkboard inspired drawings

  • How far along?: 28 weeks, 5 days
  • Baby is the size of a: Eggplant
  • Total weight gain/loss: Lost a few pounds -- I've been attempting the gestational diabetes diet.
  • The Bump: The bump might bite ya if you touch it ;) Well kick ya, not bite!
  • Symptoms: Bleeding gums...I had read about that at some point and it's been happening while brushing my teeth..awesome! And as for the stomach tightening for extended periods of time I wrote about last week...Dr did say Braxton Hicks.
  • Food Cravings: Doesn't even matter because I have been eating very well for myself ..but it is dang hard.
  • Anything Making Me Queasy or Sick: The Dr switched my medication last week and I'm still getting used to it. I usually have about an hour after taking it where I don't feel so well, but it goes away.
  • Sleep: Hello 5 am! You are boring (for now, at least, without a baby to tend to yet)
  • What I miss: Already missing normal food!
  • Weddings Rings On or Off: On...although at times they get tight. I'm attributing that to the exceptionally hot weather, or so I keep telling myself! And I'm sticking to it, because there are times where they are loose as well ;)
  • Any Names Picked Out Yet: Yes, actually, this came very easy for us contrary to what everyone told us about picking out names...but you'll just have to wait ;)
  • Gender: Baby Barr is a girl! :)
  • Movement: Lots, and her mommy and daddy love it!
  • Maternity Clothes: Not so much this past week at least. In this chalkboard picture, no maternity clothes involved {except for belly band}
  • Labor Signs: N/A
  • Best Moment of the Week: Ordering our baby's crib!
  • What I’m excited about/looking forward to: Can't wait to see baby girl on the ultrasound screen on Thursday. Sad her daddy will be missing out, but I'll fill him in on her tumbles, looks, etc.! And doctor appointments are every 2 weeks now so I get to stay well-informed on baby girl.

And about that yummy scented candle I was speaking of -- oh yes, you should try it too!
Yankee Candle's Vanilla Satin...Mmm!
Isn't it funny how a scent can help you relax and enjoy things just a little more?!

To be thinner, to be bigger, have more money,
have a cool car, a day off, a new phone, to date the person of your dreams.

27 weeks!

This week has been full of projects! Projects that my husband has even been helping out on..and that's rare ;) From painting crazy accent walls from previous tenants back to normal, to clearing out baby's room to make room for her, painting furniture, whitewashing furniture, painting decorations, and more, we can't say we haven't been making our house a home -- that's for sure! Our living room is in the process of getting a makeover, as well as baby girl's room. I'll post pictures soon as we progress a little more :)

J ended his emergency med rotation and began IM last week. He wakes up super early, gives me and belly a kiss before heading out to the hospital around 5:30am, then makes his way over to the doctor's office, where he spends the rest of the day until around 5:30pm. Some days he then has to go back to the hospital in the evening, but it hasn't been too bad. And... he has been coming home for lunch, and I love that! It helps so much -- for both him and I. It's a chance for him to break up his day, relax, unwind, eat, and it's a chance for me to have some husband time, and talk about his crazy, hectic, exciting, and most of the time, disgusting stories of the day. Fun stuff :)

27 weeks
27 weeks pregnancy chalkboard; little baby garvin inspired chalkboard updates

  • How far along?: 27 weeks, 5 days .. this week, baby girl's got all 5 senses down, including opening and closing her eyes now :) Aw!
  • Baby is the size of a: Head of cauliflower
  • Total weight gain/loss: +15-16
  • The Bump: It's pretty funny how 'the bump' has been giving me some special treatment around town. From Publix trips where men empty my cart for me and tell me "Ma'am, don't bend down, I'll get that!" to Hobby Lobby trips where a 12 year old made me go ahead of her saying "We can't have the pregnant woman standing around waiting!" It's pretty weird, and funny at the same time. Guess I may as well enjoy it, because no matter what I say, people just act that way!
  • Symptoms: Stomach tightening. Braxton Hicks? They say they can definitely happen anytime after 20 weeks, but who knows. I'll be sure to ask the Dr.!
  • Food Cravings: Nothing too good for me, I know that much.
  • Anything Making Me Queasy or Sick: Don't think so!
  • Sleep: Same as last week, except I'm starting to wake up even earlier and earlier.
  • What I miss: Not getting so exhausted after being up and about for a while, and being able to walk around stores without my feetsies hurting so bad!
  • Weddings Rings On or Off: On...and actually just noticed that in this chalkboard pic, they're off! That's weird..I am an "always wear my rings" kinda girl - I don't take them off for showers, sleeping, or anything, although many of my friends do. But apparently I take them off to paint, which is what I was doing this day!
  • Any Names Picked Out Yet: Yes, actually, this came very easy for us contrary to what everyone told us about picking out names...but you'll just have to wait ;)
  • Gender: Baby Barr is a girl! :)
  • Movement: She has her periods of moving a lot to periods of down time. Apparently that can mean a growth spurt...? Again, who knows! But when she does kick hard, you can see my upper body jolt a little.
  • Maternity Clothes: Still squeeezing into my regular jeans - those are still my favorite. Also bought these "long and lean" tanks from Target on sale that I've been wearing in the chalkboard pics and those work out well bc they are long enough to cover the belly.
  • Labor Signs: N/A
  • Best Moment of the Week: Starting on the baby's room and ordering some (very minimal amount) of bedding for her on Etsy. Exciting!
  • What I’m excited about/looking forward to: Finally seeing a doctor. It's been a while, and I won't be surprised if it doesn't go as smoothly as most appointments. There's lots that has changed since the last time! And excited to get her room together more. :)
